Managing director of performance excellence at BAE Systems will be speaking at the Association for Project Management’s annual conference on Wednesday 27th June. Peter Fielder (pictured), who is also chairman of the BAE Systems Project Management Council, will be joining an impressive list of senior and influential speakers at the Art of the Possible themed conference – book your place today.
In his role of chair Peter is responsible for the project management function and the strategic direction of over 3,000 members of the project management community who run some of the most complex projects in the world today with an order book valued in excess of £50 billion. He is also chairman of the BAE Systems Engineering Council responsible for the 34,000 professional engineers within the defence and security giant.
During his conference session Peter, who is an Honorary Fellow of APM, will draw on his experience from three decades of managing complex programmes to highlight the challenges that complexity creates and pinpoint the wide array of factors that are driving complexity in projects inexorably higher. He’ll go on to provide his view of the key success factors for managing today’s ever-increasing level of project complexity, by ensuring that the best quality processes are applied by suitably qualified, experienced and motivated people. Get this right, and the result will be more predictable, reliable and repeatable programme outcomes that deliver the desired benefits, while retaining the flexibility to respond to change in an increasingly uncertain and unpredictable world.
Peter began his career in 1977 as an Undergraduate with GEC in Manchester, spending the next ten years involved in a number of successful engineering, contract and project management activities. After that Peter joined STC and became project manager of PTAT-1, a turnkey £300 million transatlantic telephone cable system, which was awarded the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement in 1990. This was followed by three years with GEC Alsthom Rail Signalling where he managed major overseas programmes and achievement of a significant share of the UK domestic market.
In 1995 Peter joined Marconi to oversee high technology projects in the aerospace sector prior to being appointed managing director of the £2 billion development programme for the new Royal Navy hunter killer nuclear powered Astute Class submarines. Peter attended the Royal College of Defence Studies 2000 programme before being appointed business improvement director of the BAE Systems Customer Solutions and Support Group.
In 2007 Peter was appointed to the Board of the BAE Systems UK/RoW business, which both broadened and deepened the portfolio of his business improvement responsibilities into a newly constituted £7.5 billion per annum business division. Peter was appointed as managing director, performance excellence in October 2008 reporting to the BAE Systems chief executive, Ian King.
